 At the age of five I contracted TB. The next eighteen months were traumatic as doctors felt and probed the painful swelling on my neck. I had ten minute long injections drawing off the ever increasing fluid followed by the application of hot poultices.

As a child I quickly learned that men in white coats were to be feared, hated and avoided. I would lie about taking my medicine often pouring it into the flower vase by my hospital bed.

The operation to remove my tonsils seemed to make no difference and so another operation followed. In relating to my daughter in some detail the treatment of those months she looked at me with amazement and horror and said,’Mum, that’s barbaric!’

After eighteen months treatment I became a very shy, fearful person and my immune system had also taken a battering. My education also suffered and I was usually at the bottom of the class when exam results were read out.

I suffered constantly with colds and infections and a ten day course of antibiotics was regularly prescribed to deal with nasal infections. There were hospital visits for other problems which absolutely terrified me.

Once as an adult the panic in me was such that I was all for getting out of my hospital bed and running away - but adults don’t behave like that do they, so I stayed!

With poor health and poor education I became someone with low self-esteem and little self confidence. But before you feel over sorry for me I was also a fighter and a bit of a rebel!

I rebelled at many efforts by others to tell me what to do and accepted the way I was and so just got on with. Then a way forward appeared. Suddenly I realised that I no longer had to suffer monthly injections for allergies.

I no longer had to breathe with difficulty and have no sense of smell. I no longer had to suffer with long lasting colds leading to more antibiotics.

I no longer had to suffer from chest infections and bouts of pneumonia. I was wonderfully set free from all of this without any medication whatsoever.

So what had happened? What truth had I stumbled across? Oh, it was so simple but oh what a battle ensued. I was introduced to the Bible!

But how could a book that was 2000 years old possibly be of any value for me? I’d hated studying at school about Julius Caesar and other ancient historical figures, it all seemed so irrelevant. So why was the Bible any different?

I had gone to church with my mother and had sung in the choir - I enjoyed music and singing - but church was an old, cold building with ancient museum like behaviour as far as I was concerned.

I was now a young Mum in my early thirties still battling with health problems and so I was encouraged to hear why the Bible might be relevant. Oh I am so glad that I did.

I began slowly to understand and to see the relevance of Jesus and what He had done and to what He was calling me. I decided to change direction from going my way to following His way.

I was quickly released from the monthly allergy injections, followed shortly by the healing of my nose and ability to smell again. I was like a child with a new toy as I smelled roses and other things for the first time in years.

Those colds and chest infections? I haven’t had one in years! Other health issues came to light. Some have been dealt with directly by the power of Jesus, others have taken longer but I have not taken any medication for years.

The Bible has become my medicine with only positive side effects! I love it and the more I absorb it and the more I get to know Him, the healthier I have become. I hope this blesses and encourages you too to seek after Him and find that same freedom.

 Kids who think that they need to get out of school faster to get them a job or just to get out need to think of how it’s going to affect them later in life. It will be hard for you to get a good job and if you are skipped up a grade or grades, you may have to get a G.E.D so you can get into college. It can be hard for some people to get a G.E.D because they did not learn all the stuff that they need to know and if you did know some of it, it can be hard to remember it again. If you had done this, you will want to go back in time and kick yourself for what you had done.

You need to tell your kids to stay in school so they can get smart, so they get to learn new things, and so they can do what they want to do when they grow up. Tell them that school is important because you have to know how to do math, read, spell, write, and the other stuff that the teacher will teach you because you will have to use all of these things throughout your whole life. Schools and kids are up in smoke because they drop out or they just don’t want to be there. They might think that they don’t need it, but that is not true at all. When they get older, they will think a lot differently about what they have done and they will hate themselves for not going all the way through school.

The whole situation is somewhat ironic. Kids want to get out of school so bad because they don’t like it and later as adults they want to go back so they can get more out of life and to get more money. I know a lot of people that are trying to go back to school because their lives are not going the way that they wanted to, and they are doing it for themselves and for their family as well to give them a better life and make up for the mistakes that they have made. It also makes them feel good about themselves to know that they are doing something about it, and they can even open up their own business that they can feel proud of or help save lives by becoming a doctor or a nurse.

World Class Education for Our Children

 Who knows, by the time you read this article many of you have already voted for your candidate via the early voting provisions made in many states. And if that is not the case, most of you have well made up your mind on which presidential candidate you will vote for come Election Day.

As a mom of three school age children and educator of thousands of other children I have listened intently to both candidates speak their mind on providing world class education. My heart races at the thought that one candidate even goes so far as to suggest that early childhood education will become one of his hot buttons should he be elected.

Did you know that during the first five years of life ninety percent of the human brain is developed, meaning the neural pathway connections have been formed by the age of five? I find that an amazing statistic to report to fellow parents and teachers. To realize that all of those board books you share with your infant, all of the songs you sing to your baby, and all of the stories you tell to your preschooler add up to a boost of brain power for your child.

So here we have two United States presidential candidates speaking out about our education system and how they plan to help overhaul it. It is embarrassing that in other countries their children are raised from a very young age knowing not two but sometimes three and four other languages in addition to their native language.

There is a standard joke that they tell in European and Latin American countries that goes something like this, What do you call a person who speaks three languages? A trilingual person. What do you call a person who speaks two languages? A bilingual person. What do you call someone who speaks only one language? An American.

The joke is not a reflection on us as parents nor is it a reflection on us as educators. It is a reflection on our system, an obvious slam at the way in which our country has approached education and the public education system. As the parents, as the teachers, we need to stay strong and stay proud in what we do with our children in terms of educating them and preparing them for a future.

The reality of today is that these children need to be better prepared for a global society and economy. It has been obvious that our system has shortchanged us and our children in terms of that strong foundation necessary for successful travels in world that is ever shrinking. Budget cuts have taken away many of the arts in our public schools and money for private school funding seems to be shriveling up across our great nation.

We need a leader, and we need a government under that leader that will take our youth under their wing and lift them up to the standards other countries have set before us. There are reasons why the European, Latin American and other world countries have surpassed us in education. I will not go into that here. Suffice it to say that when it comes to preparing our young children in the area of world languages, the United States of America has let its population down.

As parents and as teachers and as citizens who realize the value of knowing more than just English, it is our duty to stand behind our new leader and help pave the way for a lifetime of language learning for this next generation. Sure, we can kick ourselves in the rear end for not taking our high school Spanish class seriously or for skipping college French class one too many times.

As adults we have encountered many occasions in which we wish we knew more than just English. Be it a job promotion you were passed over for because the other candidate was bilingual or trilingual, be it a communication break down between you and the care provider of your child who spoke mainly French or be it a visit to a local store where the clerk knew mainly Spanish, and you longed to have command of just the basic vocabulary of some other language in addition to English.

World class education will come to our children in our lifetime if we take a stand and exercise our right to vote first of all. Secondly we will need to commit to pay higher taxes should it be requested of us in order to support new programs or new teachers to assist in guiding our children into this higher level of language acquisition. And lastly we will need to evaluate our own approach both personally and professionally about how we embrace other people, other cultures and other languages.

Our children read us well. They know when we genuinely respect another person. They know when we sincerely like and are on board with a new way of doing things. They read our barometers well do they not?

Allow your child to see a parent, a teacher, a grand parent or a friend who truly stands behind a country where world class education is no longer a catch phrase but a concept that is alive and well and kicking into high gear with a passion for creating a generation of lifetime language learners who will be the very best global citizens ever to walk this great planet.
